Best Home Decor Stores in Central Florida

My Quest For Unique Home Decor Stores in Central Florida

I have always had a flare for the unique! Whether it be my clothing, furniture, home accents, dining choices, or vacation destinations… I’ve always sought the unusual. If everyone has it or is doing it, I’m usually not interested. On the other hand, if it’s rare or exclusive its got my attention! So when I moved to Florida 24 years ago (that almost makes me a native Floridian!) I searched for home decor stores that specialized in distinctive, high quality merchandise.

I had moved from the Northeast and was looking to change my home decor style from “old world” to a more “Floridian” look. However, pink flamingos and orange tree posters simply were not cutting it for me. My goal was to transition from a dark, moody, and elegant theme to a lighter color palette with a more relaxed “coastal” vibe. I wanted elements of the tropical landscape but it still had to feel remarkable. The cookie-cutter “box stores” that sold home decor were a dime a dozen, but I knew there had to be little gems out there somewhere, just waiting to be discovered.

Over time, I found a few home decor stores in Central Florida that were right up my alley! Definitely in a class by themselves! In this article I’ll be sharing my three favorites with you.

A Valuable Interior Design Principle

I was thrilled to find a few home decor stores that distinguished themselves from the typical. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do shop at stores like HomeGoods, Kirklands, and even T.J. Maxx or Marshalls. In fact, my best friend and I visit them nearly every week. I love buying my seasonal decor at these off-price stores. They’re perfect for home decor I will be switching out every few months, or my outdoor decor. As a Florida resident, I learned pretty quick that it’s not wise to spend a ton of money on outdoor decor. Because of the extreme heat and high humidity most of my outdoor decor only lasts for a season or two, especially on my backyard lanai which bakes in the hot afternoon sun. I’ve even had high quality fade-proof material fade!

However, I do like to purchase my permanent “main focus” furniture and decor from the more exclusive stores. Not because it costs more, but because of the wow factor! Then I use the less-expensive stores to supplement the unique anchor pieces. In styling my decor this way, a funny thing happens… it ALL begins to looks expensive! The cheaper pieces become elevated alongside their more expensive counterparts – kind of like carrying a Christian Louboutin bag while sporting costume jewelry! People just see the purse and assume everything you’re wearing is authentic and expensive. Well, the same principle applies to interior design! If done strategically, mixing high-end and low-end home decor works beautifully.

My 3 Favorite Home Decor Stores

Two of the three home decor stores that I found I’ve been shopping at ever since I moved to Florida. The Stable in Lake Alfred, and Marge’s Specialties in Orlando. The third one I just recently discovered – Adjectives Market, with five locations in Central Florida. I love that all three are local, family-owned businesses. And you don’t have to live in Florida to enjoy them. Many visitors to Orlando stop in whenever they’re in town. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a special gift for that special person, all three of these home decor stores deserve a peek.

And at Christmas time… oh my goodness, these stores are amazing! I’ll include some photos I took while Christmas shopping.

The Stable in Lake Alfred Florida

The Stable Home Decor is actually part of a small collection of unique stores, all owned by the same family for over 50 years! The Stable is the more upscale shop in the little complex. There’s also Seasons Gift Shop (specializing in seasonal home decor and gifts), The Barn Antiques (open in the fall and winter months), The Backyard Garden Shop (outdoor plants, garden decor, and accessories), and The Back Porch Restaurant. (You can link to my full-length article and review of the complex here.)

My friend and I love this place. We frequent it often, as it’s the closest one to Solivita, our award-winning active adult community. We spend hours there. And oftentimes we take a break to have lunch at The Back Porch, a delicious on-site option for hungry shoppers! It’s a quaint little restaurant serving a picnic-style lunch. In fact, prior to COVID, the lunches were actually served in a picnic basket. The lunch consists of a soup, salad, sandwich, and dessert, using the Wales family favorite recipes. The portions are somewhat small but satisfying. We never feel bloated or uncomfortably full, only rested and energized for more shopping! (Don’t forget to try the raspberry spiced tea. I’m soooo addicted to it. Good thing they sell it in the gift shop!)

The Stable offers unique home decor and wonderful gift items. They have the perfect balance of timeless, traditional decor mixed with the latest trends. You’ll browse through little vignettes that pack a big punch. It kind of makes you feel like you’re in a designer home. There’s decor, handmade wreaths, floral arrangements, candles, potpourri, lamps, framed prints, and more. They even have some clothing and fashion accessories like purses and jewelry. The prices are in the medium range; not cheap but not too expensive. And I’ve never had an issue with quality on anything I’ve bought at The Stable.

The Complex is located in rural Lake Alfred, only 30 minutes west of Disney. Check out The Stable Home Decor website for directions and hours.

Marge’s Specialties in Orlando Florida

Marge’s Specialties has been local and family owned for 47 years. At Marge’s you’ll experience Christmas 365 days a year. The owners are proud to say that Marge’s is considered to be the largest Christmas store in Florida! I can’t confirm that, but I do know there is over 50,000 square feet of awesomeness!

Marge’s is comprised of four separate buildings, two of which highlight Christmas all year long. But even though Christmas has been their claim to fame, they have plenty of year round inventory to upgrade your oasis. The showrooms feature high-end contemporary and classic furniture, custom bedding, unique home decor accessories, lighting, fine rugs, quality silk florals, clothing, jewelry and purses. You’ll see brands like Lexington, John-Richard, Curry & Company, Sam Moore, Ambella, and Hooker. Marge’s also features Spartina 449 purses and is a Brighton Authorized Retailer.

Marge’s has in-house floral designers creating exquisite arrangements that are one-of-a-kind. On any given day you may be able to watch them doing their magic. Many of the Orlando/Winter Park area designers commission their work. And at Christmastime it’s not unusual to see designers purchasing fully decorated trees for thousands of dollars each. Marge’s is the go-to source for many affluent homeowners as well. But even though they service an upscale community with expensive taste, they cannot be overlooked by the average buyer.

Not everything in Marge’s has a designer price tag. Over the past 24 years much of my home decor has been purchased there. Some items I splurged on, but others I was able to purchase on sale or at a reasonable regular price. Marge’s does have a storewide sale a few times each year, including their Christmas Open House (usually in September), Christmas in July Sale, and Black Friday Sale. I signed up for their emails so I never miss a sale!

I like to visit Marge’s at least once every season. Even if I don’t purchase a thing, it’s one of my favorite places to gain decorating inspiration. Oftentimes I’ll take photos of the elegant and luxurious displays, then attempt to create my own inexpensive (but posh) version. I highly recommend Marge’s for exclusive home decor and thoughtful gift-giving.

Marge’s is about a 70-minute drive for me, but well worth it! My bestie and I make a day of it. Marge’s has an Orlando address, but it’s very close to Winter Park. We like to spend a few hours at Marge’s then head to the boutiques (and eateries) on Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park. It’s always a long but rewarding day! (Check out my Wealthy Winter Park On A Budget article here for inexpensive things to do while in Winter Park.)

Directions and showroom hours for Marge’s Specialties can be found on their website here.

Adjectives Market in 5 Locations

My friend and I discovered Adjectives Market as we were Christmas shopping in downtown Winter Garden (not to be confused with Winter Park) a few years ago. It was a small little store with lots of unique offerings – some traditional, some trendy, and some very eclectic. As we were paying, we inquired about other stores that sell home decor. That’s when we discovered Adjectives has five locations. The flagship store is in Altamonte Springs and we had just enough time to check it out that evening. With over 40,000 square feet, it was worth the drive!

Adjectives has been in Central Florida since 2012 and a good find if you’re looking to spruce up your space. The flagship store is a beautifully curated collection of unique furniture, striking home decor, art, sculptures, oddities, and handcrafted goods. The entire store is set up with small vignettes filled with tons of inventory. It’s like little individual boutiques all under one roof. Everything from classic to quirky. Many of the pieces are custom or handmade. They can even create custom furniture in their custom studio.

Adjectives Market is also a source for local creativity. A portion of the store is dedicated to local artisans, collectors, and vendors. During one visit we watched an artist restore a vintage furniture piece. He shared the backstory of the rare item, which was just as intriguing as the furniture itself.

Since many items are one-of-a-kind with rotating inventory, if you see something you love it’s a good idea to buy it, as it may not be there next visit. I found that out the hard way! And if it’s too big to fit in your trunk, ask about their same-day delivery.

Adjectives store locations, directions, and hours can be found on their website here.

In Conclusion

I hope you have been inspired to check out these three awesome home decor stores. They’re all different, and yet very much the same: unique finds, something for every decor style, great destinations for inspiration, locally owned, and very polite, helpful staff. Grab a shopping buddy and make a day of it. Whether girls day out, mother-daughter date, widows club outing, or simply retail therapy for yourself, they’re a wonderful detour from the typical!

Marriott Harbour Lake Orlando Florida Review

Harbour Lake – Small But Mighty!

Marriott Harbour Lake is a vacation ownership resort located in Orlando Florida, the vacation capital of the world! As a Marriott Vacation Club Owner for 33 years I’ve been to nearly every ownership resort in Florida. And I can say with certainty that Harbour Lake is one of my favorites! It truly is my “home away from home!”

As a Floridian for the past 24 years, we visit the Orlando ownership resorts quite often, about 3-4 times a year. (There are 7 located in Central Florida.) Even though we live in a gorgeous resort-like community called Solivita (a 55+ active adult community), we choose to take our out-of-state family and friends to the Marriott villas every time they visit. And when our only grandchild was born 10 years ago, well, Harbour Lake quickly became our destination of choice!

Even though Harbour Lake is smaller than most Marriott ownership resorts, it packs a BIG punch! The small land mass is exactly why I love it so much. It offers all the same calendar of events and activities as ‘the big boys’ but without having to walk a mile to get anywhere. When you have young kids or grandkids that’s important.

Recently I took my grandson to Marriott Grande Vista in Orlando. It’s Marriott’s largest ownership property and I thought he would like it better now that he is 10 years old. He had a great time. But when asked where he wanted to go for his back-to-school treat, to my surprise he chose Harbour Lake! He absolutely loves it. It’s extremely family-friendly so there’s never any shortage of kids for him to play with. As an only-child that’s an important aspect for him.

Harbour Lake: Key West Island-y Vibes

Marriott Harbour Lake Banana Palm Trees and Fountain
Marriott Harbour Lake Tropical Landscaping

Harbour Lake is an island-themed oasis in Orlando, The City Beautiful. I love the Key West style architecture with its tropical pastel colors, gingerbread lacework, decorative shutters, and yes, even white picket fences! The moment you enter the Key House for check-in, you’ll experience an island-y vibe. The impeccable tropical landscaping even incorporates two of my favorite flowers – hibiscus and bird of paradise. And of course, no tropical escape is complete without Jimmy Buffett tunes which you’ll hear by the pool, oftentimes via live entertainment!

A Plethora of Harbour Lake Recreation Options

There is no shortage of things to do at this Marriott resort. Harbour Lake has two pools: Florida Falls, which includes a waterslide and children’s splash pad, and Shipwreck Landing with the ever-popular pirate ship.

Additional amenities include Recreation Station with basketball courts, pool tables, ping pong, table shuffleboard, foosball, a fire pit, and playground for tiny tots. Most of this area is covered, making it a great escape from the relentless Florida sun or shelter on a rainy day. Apollo (my grandson) and I have spent countless hours here, and I’m embarrassed to admit he now beats me at most of the games I’ve taught him to play!

Key Lime Greens, the 18-hole miniature golf course, is just a short walk from this area. And yes, Apollo beats my butt here too! For the life of me I cannot figure out how he gets a hole-in-one every single time we play!

And then there’s Harbour Field where the kids play soccer, kickball, football, and any other made-up game they can think of. As a competitive soccer player, Apollo is content to spend hours on this field every day, usually in the early evening when it’s a little cooler. Right aside of Harbour Field is the sand volleyball court.

Just a short distance from there is Harbour Landing, a beautiful and peaceful covered sitting area overlooking the lake – the best seat in the house to watch the amazing Florida sunsets! Grab your favorite beverage and head here at dusk. Oftentimes, you can see the fireworks in the distance from the area theme parks.

And for those who want to keep up with their exercise routine while on vacation, you’ll want to visit the Fitness Center for sure.

All sports equipment is free, with the exception of miniature golf ($6/per person or purchase a $30 pass which includes unlimited play for everyone in your villa for the entire length of stay). Sports equipment must be checked out and returned back to the Recreation Office located in the Key House. It’s open from 9:00am – 9:00pm daily.

Harbour Lake Resort Activities

Marriott Harbour Lake Resort Activities
Marriott Harbour Lake Resort Activities

As previously mentioned, there is an impressive list of organized resort activities… usually about 15 per day! A few of Apollo’s favorites are: Fall Slide Races, Waterslide Shootout, Water Balloon Toss, and Kids Dodgeball. During our last visit in August they even had Kids Olympic Games, in honor of the Paris Olympic Games that were underway.

My favorites are much less physically taxing, and can be enjoyed with a tropical beverage in-hand. I really like the Poolside Bingo, Music Trivia, Dueling Pianos, Royal Polynesian Revue, Acoustic Campfire & Smores, and Adult Wine Tasting. I also appreciate that the activities are changed seasonally.

Most activities are free, but a few require a minimal charge and advance reservations. For example: Adult Wine Tasting $15, and Tie Dye T-Shirts $20. And for just $5 you can do Rock Painting, Friendship Bracelets, or Color Your Own Canvas Bag. All well worth the price and experience!

For those who are a little more daring Harbour Lake offers Hair Wraps, Tattoos (temporary), Scuba Lessons, and Mermaid School! Apollo and his friend both chose the dragon tattoo!

Another fun thing is the issuance of “sand dollars.” It’s Marriott’s currency for the kids (and kids-at-heart!). Sand dollars are round plastic tokens that are given out after the completion of every activity. And you don’t have to be a winner. It’s just a thank you for participating. Sand dollars can be saved (even for future visits) and then redeemed for little prizes in the Recreation Office. Apollo is currently saving for a Marriott logo’d insulated water bottle, which requires 100 tokens (he’s almost there!).

Harbour Lake Dining Choices

On-site dining options include: The Outpost, serving beverages, ice cream and light snacks – and The Patio Bar and Grill with outdoor seating, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Apollo’s favorite is the Patio Burger with a virgin strawberry daiquiri. He would eat it every day if allowed!

There is no room delivery, but you can order ahead of time for pickup by scanning the QR code on your cell phone. This covered area also has an outdoor movie screen showing family-friendly movies and various sports in-season. Outdoor gas grills are also available at every building.

Holidays At Harbour Lake Are Awesome

Marriott Harbour Lake is a great resort any time of year, but the holidays are extra special! For us Floridians the weather has cooled down substantially, and the humidity is barely there. With endless opportunities for holiday happenings in the Orlando area, you will run out of vacation days before you run out of things to do! It’s my favorite time of year for the theme parks and destinations like Disney Springs, Icon Park, Lake Eola, and the Museums.

Harbour Lake’s central location makes it a breeze to get to any of the Orlando holiday events and celebrations. Even if you choose to chill and just hang out at the resort, Marriott makes it a special time. They decorate beautifully for Christmas (beginning around Thanksgiving), and incorporate holiday-themed activities into the schedule. The Christmas tree in the Key House is huge and a super spot for Instagram-worthy family photos! Last year the staff even participated in a gingerbread-making contest, and the guests got to cast a vote for the winner! That was fun!

I always try to make the holiday season special for my grandson. So when visiting Harbour Lake during December I’m stocked up with Christmas crafts and even a few early Christmas gifts! We play holiday games, make a gingerbread house every year, paint and bake Christmas cookie ornaments, and wear our Christmas jammies!

We take day trips to see ICE at Gaylord Palms Resort, where it’s a real challenge to get Apollo off the ice slides. We go to the Chocolate Factory to warm up with hot chocolate and special treats. (Don’t let anyone tell you it doesn’t get cold here. Oftentimes we have to wear jackets, and even coats, during the winter months in Florida!)

If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend Harbour Lake during the holidays!

Marriott Cleanliness

The recreation areas are always very clean and well kept, as are the immaculate grounds. It’s not unusual to see staff members walking around surveying the property for anything out of place. And the pool and hot tubs are always crystal clear and constantly being checked for water quality. I’ve always known Marriott to take our health and safety seriously, which is much appreciated.

As far as the villas themselves, we’ve had one or two minor maintenance issues over the years. But in every case, they were swiftly addressed by the maintenance team, and followed up with a phone call from the front desk confirming our satisfaction.

Travelers’ Choice Award 2024

Perhaps you’re on the fence when it comes to deciding whether or not Marriott Harbour Lake would be a good fit for your family’s vacation. Or maybe you’re a local couple looking for a staycation or weekend getaway wondering if Harbour Lake is more suited for guests with kids.

If you’re anything like me, I rarely book any lodging without first doing my research, which includes reading reviews. I’m happy to report that Marriott Harbour Lake is the recipient of Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award for 2024! That means Harbour Lake consistently earns great reviews from travelers and is ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.

Tips for a Better Experience

To assist in your decision, I’ve compiled a list of TIPS which you may find beneficial. Hubby and I have been staying at Harbour Lake since it opened in 2001 as Horizons by Marriott Vacation Club. In 2009 it was renamed and became Marriott Harbour Lake. As a result of our frequent stays here, I submit to you the following tips…

  • Purchase the souvenir mug in the lobby to get free (basic) coffee during your stay
  • Best location for Seaworld at only 1.3 miles away (Universal Studios is 7.1 miles and Disney Magic Kingdom is 9.8 miles)
  • If possible, don’t book during Spring Break when it’s crazy busy (not just here but throughout Florida)
  • Close proximity to restaurants (17 within a mile, including Bonefish Grill, a favorite of mine)
  • Resort is cash-free ever since COVID – must pay with credit/debit card or room charge (always a good idea to be aware of how much you are charging)
  • The 2 buildings overlooking the pools (13 & 28) will definitely experience more noise intrusion, but obviously the closest walk to the pools
  • Buildings 12 and 15 overlook the lake and offer more privacy, a good option for couples or those with no children (however, the villas toward the end of building 15 are closest to the interstate and may experience road noise accordingly)
  • If multiple families are visiting together, request rooms in the same building by calling a few weeks in advance
  • Purchase the miniature golf pass for $30 – it’s good for unlimited play for everyone in the villa for the duration of your stay
  • Marriott provides free life jackets at both pools for the kids to use during your stay
  • TV’s connect to both your Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts for plenty of viewing options
  • Good security at the Guard Gate – they actually check IDs upon entry unlike our experience at Grande Vista and other properties (and we’re always warmly greeted with a “Welcome Home!”)
Marriott Harbour Lake Site Map
Marriott Harbour Lake Site Map

Marriott Elite Status

I felt this final tip needed a more lengthy explanation. As previously mentioned, Marriott Harbour Lake is a Vacation Ownership Resort. It is not a Marriott full service hotel. Yes, it’s true, you do not have to be a Marriott Timeshare Owner to stay here, and you can conveniently make reservations at Marriott.com for a night, a week, or longer. You can even use your Marriott Bonvoy points when booking a villa (studio, 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom). And as long as you give your Bonvoy number when checking in, you will earn points for your stay.

But that’s as far as it goes. Whatever your Marriott Elite Status may be (silver, gold, platinum, etc.) does not apply at Harbour Lake (or any of the Marriott Vacation Club resorts). The “perks” of elite status will not work here. Some people have been disappointed when finding out the hard way they cannot have their favorite hotel perks. There is no room upgrades, no room service for food delivery, and no early check-in/late check-out.

Harbour Lake will, however, store your luggage if you arrive before the room is ready or need to linger later because of flight times. You are welcome to use all resort amenities, but without room access or room charging privileges. Simply inquire at the front desk. They will work to accommodate as much as possible.

In Conclusion

Marriott Harbour Lake is a fantastic choice for my needs and family. I love the convenience of a smaller resort with all the same activities of the larger ones. I’ve always been impressed with the super friendly staff willing to go the extra mile. The grounds are immaculate, villas always very clean, and security does a great job keeping me safe.

Many families I meet never leave the resort. And even if you do, it’s a great place to recover from your theme park vacation! I always leave feeling rested and refreshed… but wishing I had just one more day!

If you have any questions I haven’t addressed, feel free to use the contact option. Or, perhaps you’d like to share your own Harbour Lake experience. Our readers would love to hear from you!

Orlando Chocolate Museum & Cafe Review

A City Made Entirely From Chocolate at Orlando Chocolate Museum
A City Made Entirely From Chocolate

Florida and Chocolate: The Odd Couple!

Florida and chocolate seem like the most unlikely couple. In fact, this strange duo seems more like an oxymoron! After all, Florida is known for its hot (and oftentimes humid) weather… the absolute worst thing for chocolate delicacies! On more than one occasion I’ve encountered a big messy blob when chocolate was accidentally left in my car, even for a short amount of time. Once, my beloved homemade chocolate Easter eggs were ruined after melting in the Florida heat.

So what in the world were the creators of the Chocolate Museum and Cafe thinking when they opened their doors in Orlando Florida? That was my first thought when I realized this place existed in The City Beautiful. But as illogical and contradictory as it sounds, after visiting and touring the Chocolate Museum it all makes perfect sense. Come along as I review this unique Florida experience.

Founders of the Chocolate Museum & Cafe in Orlando Florida
Founders of the Chocolate Museum & Cafe

Hubby and I were staying at our Marriott villa in Orlando for the week with our grandson. (Side note: If you have kids and have never been to Marriott Harbour Lake, you must check it out!) Since we’re local, we go to the Orlando Marriott Vacation Club Resorts every chance we get, usually 3-4 times a year. One tradition we have is taking our grandson, Apollo, to the villa every year the week before school starts. And since we’ve already been to the Disney theme parks countless times when he was smaller, we’re always looking for new little day-trips or outings for him to enjoy.

It was a typical Central Florida day in August… high 90s, quite humid, with a big chance of afternoon thunderstorms! That left us searching for something cool and refreshing to do, and definitely indoors. Someone had recently told us about the Chocolate Museum, and since it was mere minutes from the villa, we decided to give it a go.

The Chocolate Museum and Cafe is located at 11701 International Drive, Suite 400, Orlando, Florida. Visit their website at wocorlando.com for hours of operation, ticket prices, cafe menu, private events, etc.

Chocolate Museum Guided Tour

We arrived at noon, right when they were opening (Hours: Everyday 12 noon – 6 pm; Last tour 5:00) and had the place to ourselves. Apollo the chocoholic was immediately drawn to the display case with all the chocolate goodies. Within seconds, he gave the place two thumbs up! We hadn’t even toured or tasted anything yet, but he was a happy camper.

We purchased the guided tour along with a custom candy bar for Apollo. (Customize your bar by choosing milk, white, or dark chocolate; Select 3 mix-ins; Add a personalized name.)

Since this was a spur-of-the-moment visit for us, we didn’t research any discounted ticket options. I’ve since learned that Groupon offers discounted deals. Always check them out before you go. The deals vary, but they almost always offer the guided tour and chocolate tasting for around $12, in comparison to the full price of $19/adult. It’s a nice little savings, especially if you have multiple family members. (Children 3 and under are free.) Here’s the Groupon deals for the World of Chocolate Museum, as of this writing. (*7,900 satisfied customers rating them 4.7 stars on Groupon.)

The guided tour was an immersive journey into the fascinating world of chocolate. If chocolate can come to life, this is the place it happens! We discovered the rich history, intricate processes, and various flavors that make chocolate such a global sensation. The tour began with a video presentation (bench seating provided) that did a deep dive into the origin and history of cacao – all the way from the bean to the bar!

The video was followed by a hands-on walking tour through various vignettes illustrating exactly what the video taught. We got to see some antique equipment and learned the techniques used in chocolate making. One of several highlights was the chocolate art – 25 chocolate sculptures of famous landmarks from around the world. We also enjoyed tasting various types of chocolate during the tour. Each one had a different quality and flavor. One special moment for Apollo was playing the marshmallow slingshot game!

Chocolate Museum Gets Two Thumbs Up!

The tour truly was as educational as it was indulgent! This one-of-a-kind tour will impress any authentic chocolate connoisseur, but the tour guides make it fun enough for little curious minds as well. In my opinion, it’s a great choice for any kindergarten-aged child or older. Children under 5 may find it somewhat boring, as the tour lasts 45-60 minutes, most of it standing. (Tours begin at the top of every hour, from 12-5pm.) For older adults, or anyone with mobility issues, a small foldable chair may be offered upon request.

Hubby and I were pleasantly surprised with the quality of this tour. As Florida residents for nearly 25 years we love discovering little gems like this one. Oftentimes we have visiting family or friends that prefer not to do the Orlando theme parks. The Chocolate Museum and Cafe definitely gets our vote as a really fun and delicious diversion from the typical crowded Orlando attractions.

The chocolate tour is perfect for a rainy afternoon, hiding from the Florida heat and humidity, filling in extra time before heading to the airport, or even school class trips for local Floridians. Additionally, if you’re part of a larger group, private tours are available by special request. And what would be better for an afternoon date than a chocolate and wine pairing experience? I was so impressed with this little tour that it’s now included in my list of Unique Gift Ideas for Florida Residents! Like my grandson, I highly recommend it and give the Chocolate Museum and Cafe two thumbs up!

Latitude Margaritaville Verses Solivita – A Comparison

Where to Retire?

Where To Spend Your Twilight Years

When looking for your retirement dream home you want to make the right choice. Where you spend your twilight years is a very important decision. There is no one-size-fits-all retirement community. There is no perfect place. We all have different tastes, different priorities, different goals for our senior years. Therefore, my best advice is to tour as many age-restricted communities as you can, then choose according to what feels right for you. Pay attention to your gut-feeling!

Wrinkles Only Go Where The Smiles Have Been

Two Premier Active Adult Communities

I have lived in Solivita, an award-winning 55+ community for the past 21 years (I was resident number 84!). You can read my full-length Solivita review article here. As previously mentioned, there are pros and cons to every over-55 retirement community. Obviously, I like Solivita enough to have stayed two decades, but I’m not averse to checking out the competition or discovering new options.

Recently, while vacationing with our best friends on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina (one of my favorite places on the East Coast), we toured Latitude Margaritaville, a brand new 55+ retirement community. During our visit I noticed some similarities, and some things that were distinctly different between these two premier active adult communities.

Solivita or Latitude Margaritaville Retirement Community?

Latitude Margaritaville

Latitude Margaritaville is located on highway 278, in Hardeeville – 15 miles to the bridge onto Hilton Head Island. It’s a fantastic location – 20 minutes to the world-famous beaches on Hilton Head, 30 minutes to historical Savannah (another one of my favorite Southern cities!). Latitude Hilton Head has a sister community in Daytona Beach, Florida which looks almost identical to this one in South Carolina. (Those of you looking for the tax advantages of living in Florida may want to check out Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach, or Latitude Margaritaville Watersound near Panama City Beach.) Latitude Daytona Beach will be much larger than Margaritaville Hilton Head. Margaritaville Daytona will have 7000 homes at build-out, whereas Margaritaville Hilton Head is projected to have around 3000 homes at build-out. For some people, size matters.

Latitude Margaritaville is a collaboration between master developer Minto Communities USA and global lifestyle brand Margaritaville Holdings. Minto Communities is a Florida-based company that has created 48 lifestyle communities in popular resort locations throughout the United States and Internationally. Only a few (three, to be exact) are 55+ communities — the ones called “Latitude Margaritaville.”

FYI: You can read some current reviews for Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head here.

Jimmy Buffett Themed Retirement Communities

Party Pillow - It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere

You’ve likely already guessed by the name, Latitude Margaritaville, these are Jimmy Buffett-themed retirement communities. So if you’re a Jimmy Buffett aficionado, a self-proclaimed Parrothead, your journey into senior living may want to begin here! Latitude portrays a senior lifestyle of fun, food, and of course the music of legendary singer Jimmy Buffett. At Latitude Margaritaville you’ll experience days of endless adventure and nights of non-stop fun. It’s a laid-back atmosphere with a license to chill. In fact, their motto is: “Growing older, not up!”

If you’re into an island escapism lifestyle — fun in the sun, tropical beach parties, sunset cocktails around the fire pits — this may be your retirement “paradise!” In fact, Latitude Margaritaville is rumored to have a liquor cabinet in every hallway… right between the defibrillator and first aid kit! Remember to drink responsibly though. Just because you’ve traded in your snow tires for a golf cart doesn’t mean you don’t need a designated driver from time to time.

Just like Solivita, Latitude Margaritaville is a golf cart friendly community. They actually promote the use of neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) as the primary source of transportation throughout the development.

I only have one question for all you Parrotheads… in your wildest dreams did you ever think Jimmy Buffett’s infamous Margaritaville would become an old folk’s home? Apparently he’s not just a great singer, songwriter, and author, but a pretty savvy businessman as well! (Imagine the amazement of the residents of Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head when out-of-the-blue they received a surprise visit from Jimmy Buffett! Check out the video here.)

Jimmy Buffett - Singer, Songwriter, Author, Entrepreneur

Solivita Verses Latitude Margaritaville?

As I toured Latitude Mararitaville, it was only human nature for me to make comparisons between it and my beloved Solivita. The following is my personal observation between these two premier over-55 communities.

Latitude Margaritaville

  • brand new (opened in 2018)
  • very island-y, party-like atmosphere
  • tropical-themed bright home colors and design
  • a lot smaller (3000 homes)
  • amenities being built in phases (1st phase completed)
  • no CDD fees (Community Development District)
  • Jimmy Buffett may drop in at any time!

Solivita, Kissimmee Florida

  • a bit more traditional (and/or sophisticated)
  • a more Mediterranean-themed atmosphere
  • all amenities in place
  • over 200 social clubs – every conceivable hobby & interest
  • 21-years old and looks great (gorgeous & successful)
  • some new homes, nice selection of re-sales
  • CDD fees included in property tax bill
  • soon-to-be built out (currently 6922 households)

Clearly, you can see that the right retirement community is a matter of taste. Both are award-winning, both offer “Discovery” packages that allow you to ‘try before you buy.’ I highly recommend an in-person visit to both. Check them out, converse with current residents, who tend to be brutally honest! Research the local scene — art and museums, theaters, beaches, golf, parks, airports, shopping, and healthcare. Healthcare, that’s a biggie for us seniors!

In Conclusion…

I really did like Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head. It seemed like a fun, no-worries tropical vibe kind of place in the Lowcountry. When I toured in 2019 there were very few residents because it was so new. Back then, home prices started in the low 200s. Now, the entry level prices have increased (like everywhere else in this current seller’s market) to the mid 200s. At the conclusion of my tour I received an impressive marketing packet from the sales preview. It is thorough and comprehensive. However, most of the information can also be found online at LatitudeMargaritaville.com.

I love the Latitude Margaritaville website. It’s incredibly user-friendly, and has most of the important information you would want to know, readily accessible. For example: You can browse the floor plans here. Or watch an introductory video here. Or how about those dreaded HOA fees? I appreciate that Latitude Margaritaville is up front with that information and openly displays the HOA fees right here. Or take a virtual tour of every model home… all 14 of them! Wait until you see those tropical interior designs! Bright, bold, and beautiful. Simply amazing. At the very least, you’ll get some home decor inspiration and design ideas to remodel or update your current home. I literally took hundreds of pictures during my tour. A few of my favorites are below…

Orlando ICON Park – Review and Photos

ICON Park Orlando Florida
ICON Park Orlando Florida

ICON Park – Escape the Expected!

What’s the first thing you think of when someone says “Orlando, Florida?” Disney? Universal Studios? Sea World? Yes, and with good reason. More people visit Orlando than any other city in the United States, including a record 75 million visitors in 2019! And the majority of them are en route to the theme parks. But whether you’re visiting Orlando [the vacation capital of the world] for the very first time or are a seasoned Florida resident, sometimes you just need a break from the hustle and bustle (and blisters and sunburns) of the Central Florida theme parks.

Enter ICON Park – the new kid on the block! Well, it not exactly brand new because it’s been around for a few years, but it is constantly evolving. ICON Park is located right in the heart of the world-famous Florida attractions, but allows you to slow down a bit, catch your breath, and experience a family friendly relaxed vibe while still creating iconic moments. In fact, ICON Park is the perfect place to escape the expected. After you’ve exhausted Orlando’s 7 major theme parks and 4 full-size waterparks, head over to ICON Park to unwind and uncover something different.

The ICON Park Complex

ICON Park encompasses 20 acres and is located less than two miles from the Orange County Convention Center, and close to all major resorts and hotels on famed International Drive (I-Drive, to us locals!). So what exactly is ICON Park Orlando? Well, it’s a tourist attraction, a state-of-the-art entertainment destination, a dining mecca, and a date-night favorite with locals, all rolled into one great venue. Forbes ranks ICON Park among the 7 Best Attractions in Orlando, and USA Today says it’s the #1 Attraction in Orlando For Tots, Teens & In-Betweens! Additionally, ICON Park has received TripAdvisor’s 2019 Certificate of Excellence, and TripAdvisor’s 2020 Travelers’ Choice Award. Pretty impressive, huh?

Dining and Shopping at ICON Park

For starters, ICON Park is home to a plethora of restaurants, 16 at my last count, with a wide variety of cuisines. For example, Darden’s Yard House (you won’t be disappointed with the Nashville Hot Chicken) and Uncle Julio’s Mexican Restaurant (check out their one-of-a-kind chocolate piñata) are just a few that i’ve tried, both of which I highly recommend. Both had very good food, great service, and reasonable prices. (Left with a doggie-bag both places!)

Other restaurants include Tapa Toro Spanish Restaurant, Tin Roof, Shake Shack, Sugar Factory, iCafe de Paris, iLounge Istanbul, Mikado Japanese Restaurant, and Ox Grill Contemporary Cuisine. One of ICON Park’s newest culinary additions has just recently opened (June 2020), from one of country music’s iconic names — Blake Shelton’s Ole Red Orlando, bringing the best of Southern food and live music. Whether you’re looking for reasonably priced casual fare with family and friends, or an upscale exquisite fine-dining experience sure to impress your honey, ICON Park has it all!

***TIP: Many ICON Park restaurants offer Happy Hour deals on food and beverages. Yard House, for example, has 1/2 off select appetizers and all pizzas — and $2 off wine, spirits, cocktails, and draft beer (they boast the world’s largest selection of draft beer, with 130 on tap!). Check out their Happy Hour Menu and Hours here. And here’s a complete list of all ICON Park dining locations, some of which accept reservations through OpenTable.

And when it comes time to walk off those calories there’s no better place to stroll than ICON Park with its beautiful park-like setting. You’ll definitely want to browse the small boutique shops and outdoor merchandise kiosks, keeping an eye out for unique apparel, exclusive Florida plush, and souvenir items you won’t find in most Central Florida’s off-price cookie-cutter gift shops.

On a recent visit, my cousin from Pennsylvania was able to purchase all her souvenirs without even leaving the ICON Park complex. Yes, even a gift for her hard-to-please teenage granddaughter! On another visit my aunt found a special little gift for her newborn great-granddaughter from an outdoor kiosk. And after you’re feeling accomplished with the perfect keepsake souvenirs for friends and family, don’t forget to treat yourself by checking out the novelty candy (more than 300 varieties) at the Sugar Factory. Yes, they even have sparkly designer lollipops, called Couture Pops, made famous on the red carpet in the hands of celebrities!

A plethora of casual dining choices at ICON Park Orlando with over 40 shops and restaurants.

ICON Park Attractions & Discounts

ICON Park has become my new go-to destination with out-of-state friends and family who want a change of pace from the BIG-3… Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. With seven different attractions at ICON Park, you can spend an hour, half-day, or a full day — the choice is yours. This venue has a nice set up in that you can purchase a single ticket for one attraction or a money-saving combo ticket for a better value. I was able to take advantage of special Florida resident ticket pricing on multiple attractions, just by showing my Florida driver’s license. Additionally, buying tickets in advance online will always get you a better price, Florida-resident or not. Most times the tickets will not expire for a full year (always check the terms and conditions). And sometimes you may find good deals on Groupon as well (just be careful of any restrictions or expiration dates if purchasing from this website).

The bottom line is this: There are enough avenues offering discounted tickets and packages that you should NEVER have to pay full retail price for any attraction at ICON park! There are group rates (7 guest minimum), combo tickets (choose 2, 3, or all 7 attractions), Florida resident rates, Georgia and Alabama resident rates, annual pass for Florida teachers, military discount, Orange County Convention Center attendees (show your badge), and Park Topper discounts (simply show your theme park ticket). And if you’re an Orlando hospitality worker, you and your immediate family can enjoy special discounts and some freebies during Hospitality Mondays (workplace ID required), including $5 tickets to The Wheel! Here’s a link to all the current deals and specials.

Madame Tussauds Orlando

I especially like the indoor attractions at ICON Park for a really hot or rainy day in the Sunshine State (and we do get our fair share of both!). A good choice is Madame Tussauds Orlando Wax Museum where selfies with your favorite celebs are commonplace. In addition to all the star-studded beautiful people, I was excited to see a special limited-engagement Justice League exhibit the day I visited. I was transported to the streets of Metropolis and Gotham City with incredible 4D effects that literally blew my mind! Each Superheroes set was hands-on and created a unique challenge for me. Some I conquered, but a few flat-out conquered me! I teamed up with legends like The Flash, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman. Then I happened to be at the right place at the right time because Superman needed help lifting a REAL helicopter! Yeah… definitely unforgettable!

SEA LIFE Orlando

Another great indoor option when it’s blistering hot is SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium where you’ll come face-to-fin with sea turtles, stingrays, sharks, and other marine life. This is a popular attraction for all ages, but especially those with smaller children. Kids are fascinated by Florida’s ONLY 360° walk-through tunnel, and moms and dads love the amazing photo opportunities of the underwater world. Instagram-worthy for sure! And for the adventurous-spirit in your household, don’t leave without a visit to the Coastal Rockpool where your brave one can touch real sea creatures. Educational dive shows also occur periodically throughout the day (inquire about schedules at the admissions desk). And for a really special treat, upgrade your ticket to include a 25-minute (or 60-minute) behind-the-scenes tour with expert scuba divers who will show you how the aquarium is run.

***NOTE: Certified teachers in the State of Florida teaching grades PreK-12 can receive a FREE Annual Pass to assist with planning and researching potential field trips. Click here for valid ID requirements. Florida Teacher Pass also available for LEGOLAND Florida Resort and Madame Tussauds Orlando.

7D Dark Ride Adventure

Another indoor attraction is the 7D Dark Ride Adventure. I’ll be the first to admit, I was not brave enough to try this. It’s a state of the art shooting game with seven dimensions including light, wind, sound, motion, smell, and user interaction, all while playing a 3D video with zombies and a robot creating mad scientist. The adrenaline rush is definitely real if gauged from the ear-piercing screams I witnessed every time the ride was in motion. For me, mustering up the courage to go on The Wheel (400 feet above the earth) was about all my heart could handle!

Arcade City

For those with a competitive-spirit but looking for something a little less dramatic than the 7D Dark Ride Adventure, Arcade City is an indoor option with enough challenging feats for the whole family. Put on your best game face and you’ll not only break records, but also win prizes.

Pearl Express Train

In addition to the four indoor attractions, ICON Park has three outdoor choices — one for kids (or kids-at-heart), one for the whole family, and one for adventure enthusiasts. You can hop on the Pearl Express Train for a train ride that will take you on a tour of ICON Park. You won’t miss the train station, it’s located right in the courtyard. And if you’re lucky enough to be at ICON Park during the holidays, check out the holiday display right beside the Pearl Express Train.

Orlando StarFlyer

Another outdoor attraction is the Orlando StarFlyer. But since my inner thrill-seeker seems to have disappeared years ago, I couldn’t even entertain the thought of flying high on the world’s tallest swing. If I’m going to feel the wind in my hair and the breeze on my face it’s going to be with my feet planted firmly on the ground! (Having visions of a semi-tropical ocean breeze right now with feet sinking in the sand! Not extraordinarily exhilarating, but with all fear-factor deliberately removed. Anxiety is simply not my cup of tea!) Towering 450-feet tall, on the StarFlyer you’ll be seated in a double seat next to your friend with seat belts and a harness that can only be unlocked by the ride operator. The giant swing moves up and down while rotating around the tower… at speeds of up to 45mph! Tickets are fairly inexpensive at around $11. Nonetheless, I much rather view the Central Florida skyline from inside a secure capsule on The Wheel!

The Wheel at ICON Park

A trip to Orlando is not complete until you see The City Beautiful at 400 feet! Unquestionably the crown jewel of ICON Park, The Wheel (formerly called the Orlando Eye) is a super-sized Ferris wheel right in the center of the shopping and dining complex. You may have cringed a little when I said “Ferris wheel.” Initially, I did too! I’m not usually a fan of traditional Ferris wheels, but The Wheel at ICON Park is anything but a traditional amusement park ride.

After being ruthlessly pestered by my visiting relatives, I reluctantly gave in to their desire to go on The Wheel. Can I tell you something? I am super happy that I did! In fact, I’ve been on it multiple times now. I barely felt it moving! The ICON observation wheel rotates at less than one mile per hour, taking 18-23 minutes to do one complete revolution (it may stop periodically to accommodate guests with mobility issues). Now that’s a speed I can handle! And there’s absolutely no rocking or swaying with the capsules, unlike most smaller Ferris wheels. No wonder… each capsule weighs a whopping 6,600 pounds! Because ICON Orlando is in Florida, The Wheel was built extra strong. During a major storm it is locked down, and can [reportedly] withstand a category 5 hurricane. (Hopefully we never have to put it to the test!) But you get the idea of how sturdy the capsules are if they can withstand winds of 156-mph!

And not only are the capsules sturdy, they’re very quiet, spacious, and comfortable. Each capsule holds a maximum of 10 guests. You can sit, stand, or walk around — you’ll have a fantastic 360-degree view either way. And when the heat is on… no worries, the capsules are air-conditioned. I’ve been on the ICON Wheel both during the day and at sunset. Both have their advantages, but I did enjoy the view much better during daylight hours (not to mention shorter lines). It was much easier locating various landmarks.

From the top of The Wheel you can see the Downtown Orlando skyline, and on a clear day nearly all the way to Cape Canaveral to the East. Challenge one another with a fun game of “I Spy” to locate various points of interest, like the epic Hulk roller coaster at Universal, or a smokey volcano slide at Volcano Bay. You may be surprised what your kids spy with their little eyes! You may see the Kennedy Space Center, renowned International Drive, Legoland, or Amway Center (home of the NBA Orlando Magic). Or try counting the number of lakes you see. Lots of lakes! There are actually more than 100 lakes in Orlando alone, including popular Lake Eola, which hides a sinkhole 80 feet deep. (Check out my review of Lake Eola here.)

Of course, if you’re doing date-night at ICON Park you’ll definitely want to ride The Wheel at sunset or after dark. Splurge on the “private capsule” where you and your date will have the capsule all to yourself. What could be more romantic than a Florida sunset, or watching Disney fireworks while 400 feet high in the sky — softly swaying to love songs playing in the background and city lights sparkling in the darkness? Add a champagne toast (from the snack and beverage bar right before boarding), and you’ve just created the perfect romantic evening!

***TIP: The Wheel made the list of 9 Unforgettable Places to Propose in Orlando! Or how about this… a Gender Reveal on The Wheel? Yes, the gloating parents-to-be can choose to reveal their babies’ genders at The Wheel. As their friends and families are gathered on the central lawn, The Wheel can light up pink or blue on cue for all of Orlando to see!

***TIP: The Wheel easily accommodates those with mobility issues, as two people in our group did. One used a cane, the other used a walker, and had no problems getting on or off. The capsules are even spacious enough for wheelchairs.

***TIP: A photographer will take pictures of your group immediately before boarding The Wheel. For a money-saving tip, I suggest purchasing only one (your group can split the cost) photo package because you will then receive a website code to view and download the photos online.

In Conclusion

ICON Park is open 365 days a year, and with free admission and free parking (I prefer the outdoor parking lot verses the cramped parking garage with lines of cars fighting for a spot) I highly recommend a visit. The atmosphere is great, the light show is really cool, the complex is clean, and all Staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Additionally, I’m pretty sure this place is Mickey-approved!

Fall in Florida: Best Things To Do

Fall in Florida - Best Things To Do

Fall in Florida is Fun!

I love fall in Florida! As an 18-year Florida resident, autumn is one of my favorite seasons in the Sunshine State. For those who say Florida has no seasons, I beg to differ. If you’ve never experienced cool, crisp mornings or sweater weather under the canopy of a star-lit sky, you haven’t visited Florida at the right time of year.

Fall in Florida is so much fun! Just like our northern counterparts we have pumpkin picking, warm apple cider, pumpkin latte’s, hayrides, bonfires, and all the colors of autumn. You just have to know where to look. To get you started, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite things to do in Central Florida in the fall. Here’s 4 unbe-leaf-able fall picks…

Bok Tower Gardens

Bok Tower Gardens is gorgeous any time of year, but fall is special because of the cooler temperatures and lower humidity. Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark in Lake Wales, about an hour’s drive from the world famous Disney theme parks. It’s composed of Botanical Gardens, Nature Trails (with Geocaching, if you’re into that!), the Singing Tower (housing a 60-bell carillon, one of the finest in the world), Pinewood Estate (a timeless, enchanting 20-room Mediterranean-style mansion), and the newest addition, Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden (my grandson’s favorite). There’s so much to see here, plan on a half-day to experience it all. Pack a picnic lunch, or visit The Blue Palmetto Café on site.

Bok Tower Gardens is open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. For prices, directions, membership options, activities, and calendar of events, check out the Bok Tower Garden website.

TIP: Florida residents may want to consider an annual pass to Bok Tower Gardens. For $75 (a duo membership) hubby and I get unlimited year-round visits, discounts at the Blue Palmetto Café and Tower & Garden Gift Shop, and FREE admission to over 300 public gardens (and some museums) throughout the United States through the American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Program

Leu Gardens and Museum

As a Florida resident, I limit my time outdoors in the heat of the summer. But when we sail out of September and dash into cooler October days, I delight in Florida’s outdoor activities. For me, fall in Florida is perfect weather… daytime highs in the low 80s, nighttime lows in the 60s. One of the ways I celebrate fall in Florida is a visit to Leu Gardens. Botanical gardens are one of my simple pleasures in life. As an amateur photographer I enjoy them tremendously. And the awesome thing about botanical gardens in Florida is that there is always something in bloom. October and November is especially gorgeous, as the colors of autumn abound at Harry P. Leu Gardens.

This 50+ acre botanical beauty is nicely separated into 14 easy-to-navigate sections. (Here’s a printable map of Leu Gardens to help you plan your visit.) Additionally, you’ll want to check the calendar of events before you go. From outdoor movie nights to special exhibits to jazz strolls, there’s always something happening at Leu Gardens. A short 40-minute drive from Walt Disney World allows you to escape the theme park madness and experience a piece of vintage Florida! Hours, prices, and directions can be viewed on the Harry P. Leu Gardens website.

TIP: Annual membership to Leu Gardens for Florida residents start at just $35, and also include reciprocal privileges or discounts to American Horticultural Society partners nationwide. A botanical garden membership is also an excellent and unique gift idea!

Club Lake Plantation Fall Festival

After a long hot and humid summer most Floridians find themselves searching for classic signs of fall in Florida. Thankfully, we don’t have to look far for some Florida-style harvest fun. October in the Sunshine State is jam-packed with plenty of pumpkin patches and fall festivals galore. This year our family headed out to the farm — Club Lake Plantation in Apopka. My 4-year-old grandson had a blast, and we had a blast watching him have so much fun!

At Club Lake Plantation’s Fall Festival there are hay rides, two corn mazes (one for toddlers), a pumpkin patch, Country Store, play structures, high strikers, football area, basketball area, The Cow Wash (no one told me I would get wet!), and much more! Pumpkin chunkin’ and tennis ball launching from an air cannon are also available (for an extra fee). This month-long celebration of fall is quite popular, and only 32 minutes from the Central Florida theme parks. The weekend admission is a bit pricey at $13.95 per person (adults pay too, even though they generally do not participate in the games), but weekdays are only $7.95. Regardless, Club Lake Plantation is definitely one of the best fall festivals in close proximity to Orlando.

Disney Magic Kingdom Theme Park

As a Floridian (and Disney lover), I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Disney theme parks as an option for fall-themed activities — specifically Magic Kingdom. Whether you’re one of the millions of tourists (116.5 million visitors in 2017!) or a Florida resident, the fall is absolutely one of the best times to plan a trip to Disney. Cooler temps, lower humidity, and fewer crowds (schools are back in session) are the perfect recipe for park hopping. The fall displays and decorations at Magic Kingdom are my favorite of all the parks. The minute you approach the front entrance you’ll be in a fall state of mind. There are plenty of pumpkins, a plethora of scarecrows, and the aroma of pumpkin spice sweets and treats fill the air. If you really feel like splurging, consider the annual Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (offered on select nights in September and October). Although pricey, it’s a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating.

For theme park hours, ticket prices, or hotel and dining reservations, visit the official Disney website.

TIP: Florida residents can save a bundle with the Weekday Select Annual Pass. It’s the annual pass option I’ve chosen ever since its inception. It’s extremely affordable, and I don’t say that about too many Disney related products! For more information and details, you can access my review of the Weekday Select Annual Pass right here.

Christmas in Florida: How to Celebrate in a Warm Weather Climate

Christmas in Florida: How to Celebrate in a Warm Weather Climate

Getting in the Christmas Spirit… Florida Style!

You know you’re in Florida when… you’ve just heard the latest weather forecast announcing an impending cold-front, and the high temps are only going to be in the mid 70’s! As a transplant to Florida 18 years ago from Pennsylvania, I was not used to such mild temperatures during the holiday season. As much as I thrive in a warm weather climate, wearing tank tops and capris to decorate the tree just didn’t seem right.

Though I loved most everything else about the Sunshine State, sweating profusely while preparing for Santa was not on that list! Christmas shopping in shorts? Come on. Therefore, in an effort not to get depressed and homesick around the holidays, I knew I had to deal with this daunting dilemma. To my amazement, I not only learned how to cope with this quandary… but I conquered it!

Whether you’re a full-time Floridian like me, or traveling here for the holidays, this article includes tips and recommendations for getting in the Christmas spirit… Florida style!

Getting in the Christmas Spirit: Florida Style

TIP #1 – The Power of Perspective is Key to a Merry Christmas in Florida

I have come to learn that attitude, not circumstances, make the difference in any situation. My first (and I believe the most important) recommendation is: the power of perspective. In order for me to have the same level of excitement and joy that I was accustomed to in Pennsylvania, I had to adjust my way of thinking. Initially I thought I couldn’t have a great Christmas simply because the weather was warm, no chance of snow, and all my relatives were back home in the cold Keystone State.

My perception was becoming stronger than reality. The more I meditated on what I didn’t have for the holidays, those negative thoughts clouded my vision to the multitude of blessings all around me. What I needed was an attitude adjustment! Since millions of people live in Florida, and millions of people have a merry Christmas every year, then it’s possible for me. I realized that Christmas, like any other day in my life, would become whatever I made of it. When I stopped basking in my self-made pity party and changed my perspective, I was on my way to an awesome yuletide.

Christmas in the Sunshine State

TIP #2 – Warm Weather Deserves Dazzling Decorations

As I began to think only positive thoughts, my whole demeanor changed. I decided to decorate! After all, if I could brave the frigid temps, snow, sleet, and ice in my thermals to put up my Christmas displays, then I should be able to do better in the cozy warmth of Florida. My chunky, fleecy coats were replaced with festive tee-shirts, and my boots with boat shoes — was that such a bad thing? I never really liked putting on all those layers of clothing anyway. In fact, I had a passionate dislike for it!

So, I decided to take advantage of the warm weather, rather than allowing it to take advantage of me. Yes, warm weather deserves dazzling decorations. When frozen fingers on the verge of frost bite are set free from moisture-ridden mittens, it’s amazing what they can create. So, go ahead, take it off, take it all off — the winter wardrobe that is! Eliminate the extra weight and decorate, decorate, decorate. You’ll adjust to decorating palm trees instead of pine trees, I promise!

TIP #3 – Add Some Savvy Southern-style Accents to your Holiday Home

After my perspective changed, and I realized I could create some pretty dazzling displays outdoors without frostbite, my focus turned inward. This part was relatively easy… and familiar. Up north I was used to decorating almost every room of my house for the holidays, and with the same Old-world color scheme here, I was able to use many of the identical decorations. (It was surprising how well they handled the move.)

With the addition of a Florida-room and formal dining area, I had the pleasure of purchasing some new decorations. This allowed me to introduce some Southern-style holiday accents to my home. The selection of palm-tree-themed and beach-themed holiday housewares were beyond my expectations — not tacky as I had imagined, but rather formal and classy. In fact, some of my favorite holiday home tours included a coastal Christmas theme. My Florida home was beginning to look like Christmases past… only better!

Here’s How to Easily Add Southern Accents to your Holiday Home

Incorporating just a few of these Florida-favorites with your existing holiday decor can help “Southern-ize” your holiday home! They can be purchased in almost any color scheme. And although the items signify a casual and relaxed motif, they can be made into some gorgeous, elaborate Christmas decorations!

  • palm trees
  • sea glass, seashells, starfish, & sand dollars
  • pineapples
  • magnolia leaves
  • flip-flops
  • flamingos
  • sand sculptures
  • manatees & dolphins
  • oranges & citrus fruit
  • alligators
  • barefoot Santa
  • And, of course… the infamous “Mouse Ears!”

TIP #4 – Spread the Christmas Spirit in your Tropical Attire!

Just like your northern counterparts, tis the season to sport your holiday attire. Don’t think for a minute that Christmas clothing can’t be worn in Florida. Yes, we’ve traded our festive fleece-lined sweatshirts for Tori Richard embroidered tropical Camp Shirts, and our velour skirts for Tommy Bahama shorts — but it works! Our unique winter wardrobe may show Santa barefoot on the beach, and our partridge hiding in a palm tree, but it’s a fantastic and fun way to spread the Christmas spirit everywhere we go! And… did I mention our tropical holiday attire looks terrific with a winter tan?

BONUS TIP: How to Decorate with Disney-Designed Displays

There’s no better way to unleash the decorating diva in me than to visit the myriad of upscale hotels and resorts that are synonymous with the Sunshine State. I must say, more than anything else, I look forward to this annual tradition hubby and I have begun 18 years ago. Wearing our Tommy Bahama Christmas threads, and with camera in hand, we choose a day in early December to take the tour. The resorts are always awe-inspiring, to say the least! It’s the best way for me to see the latest holiday trends and decorating techniques. I’m continually amazed at the mix of [non-traditional] materials used to create their holiday masterpieces.

Of course, no one does decorating better than Disney! With more than 25 Disney hotels and resorts to choose from, we usually spend an entire day on Disney property, going from hotel to hotel. My favorites are Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, The Contemporary Resort, The Polynesian, and Animal Kingdom Lodge — always imaginative, intuitive, and impressive! After a few hundred (or so) photos, I extract the ideas that appeal to my taste and incorporate them into my own holiday home. It’s a fail proof way to transform drab displays into something dramatic every time.

Certainly, other hotel brands have a professional portfolio of holiday displays as well. But, I haven’t found any as mind-blowing and memorable as Disney. Year after year, those Disney decorators are capable of getting my creative juices flowing. The “Mouse” always motivates me!

TIP: If you’re a Florida resident looking for an inexpensive annual Disney Pass, you must read my popular review about the Disney Weekday Select Pass option. It can potentially save you tons of money.

A Bit of Winter in Summer-like Conditions!

Okay, so you’ve changed your perspective, donned some dazzling [Disney-inspired] decorations, added some Southern charm, and picked that perfect tropical shirt to spread some holiday cheer. Additionally, here are a few more seasonal suggestions to fuel that festive feeling while craving a bit of winter in summer-like conditions.

  • Mail your Christmas Cards, Holiday Letters and Pretty Packages from Christmas, Florida! Christmas, Florida is a tiny little town east of Orlando, on Highway 50. The small and otherwise peaceful Post Office becomes a popular destination during the holidays, as scores of people want that coveted “Christmas” postmark on their mailings. (And while you’re there, why not visit the full-size replica of Fort Christmas in this historical town?) Christmas, Florida also hosts the Annual Cracker Christmas the first weekend in December.
  • Create Custom Cards, Letters, Postage, and Gifts! I’ve never liked anything typical. If everyone else has it or is doing it, I usually don’t want it! And when it comes to my holiday cards and gifts, that’s no exception. I’m a camera-buff. I never leave home without it. With so many incredible photo opportunities beneath the Florida sun, the photos make for some outstanding personalized Christmas creations. And with user-friendly websites like Zazzle, I don’t have to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Design to create a custom masterpiece. I’ve designed holiday cards, letterhead, postcards, postage stamps, calendars, posters, canvas art, caps, shirts, phone cases, and much more, with images I’ve captured year-round in my sub-tropical domain. I can assure you, my Florida-themed Christmas gifts never get re-gifted!
  • Participate in a Neighborhood Progressive Dinner! Hubby and I have attended several of these, and they are a boat-load of fun. This is one of the best opportunities for a group of friends or neighbors to get together during the holidays. It can be done with a Christmas or New Years-theme, in the afternoon or evening. Not familiar with the concept? Here’s how it works: Several neighbors volunteer to be a “host home” for each of the designated meal courses — a different home for each course. Typically, there are 3 – 5 courses chosen. The most popular are appetizers, salad/soup, entree, and dessert. You may want to add a cheese course or cocktail/beverage stop if desired, depending on the interest level and time constraints. Neighbors either walk (yep, we’re immune from treacherous ice) or carpool from house to house. Details and food donations are worked out in advance. And, for you decorating divas, what an incredible avenue to showcase your talent!
  • Host a Holiday Open House! This is another great social event, not only for neighbors, but friends, relatives, church groups, co-workers, etc. The invitation list for an Open House can be much larger than the Progressive Dinner since the guests will come and go as they please and will not stay for the entire time listed on the invite. For food, you may choose an elaborate buffet or simply show off your blockbuster baking skills with colorful cookies and creative candies. In Florida, it’s fun to do a beach-theme or southern-theme and encourage guests to dress accordingly.

Snow, Freezing Temps, Ice Skating, Real Reindeer… in Florida? You Bet!

Think snowfall and sleigh rides only occur north of the Mason-Dixon line? Think again! From Key West to Orlando to Amelia Island, and everywhere in between, the beauty and wonder of wintertime abounds in Florida! There are no unemployed elves here. Annually, evergreen enterprises deck the halls to deliver a “cool yule” to Florida residents and visitors from around the world. I’ve discovered there is no shortage of season’s greetings in the Sunshine State. The following is a list of my favorite holiday happenings to experience the best of Christmas in Florida. Check them out… you’re just in the “Nick” of time!

In Conclusion…

By implementing these simple tips and suggestions, I was able to make a successful transition from a [real] white Christmas to one where the weather is much, much warmer. Still, there are twinkling lights, caroling, photos with Santa, and nippy nights with my sweater sipping hot spiced cider. Flames flicker brightly from the electric fireplace in my Florida-room as I binge-watch Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies for hours on end. (TIP: to create your own romantic Christmas story visit St. Augustine in December!) Towns throughout Florida go all out to celebrate this magical time of year. True, the weather outside may not be frightful, but I’ve come to realize that Christmas in Florida can be oh so delightful!

Have you ever spent Christmas in Florida or a warm-weather destination? Perhaps you have a festive tip you can add to our list. Please share in the comment box below… our readers would love to know!

Casa de Suenos: A Romantic St. Augustine Bed and Breakfast

Casa de Suenos: A St. Augustine Bed and Breakfast

Destination: A Romantic Bed and Breakfast Getaway

A 30th wedding anniversary deserves special recognition, in a special place, don’t you think? Coupled with the fact our anniversary was on Thanksgiving Day this year, was even more reason to choose a celebration destination that would deliver a memorable experience worthy of our love for each other, and life itself. For this occasion we didn’t want a traditional hotel with hoards of people, making it difficult to relax and embrace our romantic side. Our lodging of choice was for a one-of-a-kind, intimate bed and breakfast, conducive for a romantic getaway. We wanted the accommodations to be fabulous, in a class of its own.

We hadn’t been to a bed and breakfast inn since celebrating a milestone birthday for hubby, three years ago. For that special occasion we were fortunate to find the River Lily Inn Bed and Breakfast overlooking the intracoastal Halifax River in Daytona Beach (Holly Hill), Florida. Everything about our four-night stay there was outstanding… and a hard act to follow! The River Lily Inn had become our new standard of excellence for Florida B&Bs. The B&B bar had been raised, and we were on a mission to match that esteemed bed and breakfast experience.

Casa de Suenos: House of Dreams

Casa de Suenos: House of Dreams

Part of our 25th wedding anniversary getaway was spent in Saint Augustine, Florida, and we have always wanted to return to that Ancient City on Florida’s Historic Coast. As a Florida resident, St. Augustine is only a few hours from home, and quickly became a new favorite destination of mine. I liked everything about it — the city, the architecture, the rich history, the epicurean delights, and of course, the warm Southern hospitality. As we began researching St. Augustine B&B’s, our first-choice was the St. Francis Inn. Imagine my disappointment then, to be told they had no vacancies for my anniversary date. The nice lady on the phone, however, mentioned they have a sister-BnB we may be interested in, called Casa de Suenos. After further review, we took her recommendation and booked four nights in the Sevilla Room — a decision that would later define the whole essence of a truly romantic getaway!

Casa de Suenos is a Spanish phrase, meaning House of Dreams. I can tell you now, the name says it all! It’s a fantastic place to just relax, unwind, and dream little… or a lot. If you allow the atmosphere of this place to seep into your soul, you will find yourself revisiting those [forgotten] dreams you once held tight. Yes, Casa will challenge you to dream again, only BIGGER this time!

Casa de Suenos: Gracious Southern Hospitality

The check-in at Casa de Suenos was a smooth and pleasant experience. Upon our arrival we were greeted immediately by Steve, one of the gracious hosts of the inn. He was just beginning a tour of the inn with another couple who had arrived before we did, so he recommended we have a seat in the sitting room/parlor. Can we just pause for a moment and look at this gorgeous room? Who wouldn’t want to kick back in this black and white beauty?

Almost immediately hubby and I were in a de-stressed state mind! Steve was back in a jiffy and left no stone unturned as he explained everything the inn had to offer, alerted us to the “rules of the house,” and gave us a personal tour of our home for the next five days.

Casa de Suenos Guest Amenities

Here are a few of the guest amenities you can expect at Casa de Suenos:

  • Free Onsite Parking (a rare commodity in St. Augustine)
  • 3 Free “Food Events” Daily (breakfast, social hour, and dessert)
  • Coffee, Teas, Hot Chocolate, Soda, & Bottled Water (available 24 hours a day in the front sitting room)
  • Nighttime Snack Basket in Dining Room (for those wee hour munchies)
  • Inn-Baked Signature Cookies
  • A Selection of DVDs for Guest Use
  • Use of Plush Terry Bathrobes
  • In-room Cream Sherry Decanter
  • Complimentary Fresh Flowers
  • St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum Passes
  • Discounted Entry into the “Oldest House” Museum
  • Use of Bicycles
  • Use of Umbrellas and Ponchos (kept in the foyer area)
  • A Heated Swimming Pool (at Casa’s sister-property, St. Francis Inn B&B)
  • Access to Anastacia Fitness Club
  • An Afternoon at the Beach with Casa’s Sister-Property, “Our Beach Cottage” (with free use of beach chairs, towels, private bathroom with shower, refrigerator, off-street parking pass)

As if all of this were not enough, hubby and I received two complimentary tickets to the holiday “Nights of Lights” trolly tour, two complimentary beverages at Claude’s Chocolates after the tour, and a sample box of Claude’s Chocolates — all for making our reservations months in advance! Oh, I almost forgot to mention the complimentary champagne for our wedding anniversary! WOW… that’s a whole lot of “freebies,” don’t you think?

Additionally, in a casual conversation with Steve one day, hubby mentioned we don’t drink Sherry, but that it’s a nice touch in the room nonetheless. And guess what? Hubby walked away with something that he does like very, very much. What a personal touch and totally unexpected gift from Steve! I won’t give specifics so as to not invoke jealousy, but the folks at Casa de Suenos are very generous, and very hospitable. All the hosts have one goal in common: to assure the utmost of customer satisfaction.

Casa de Suenos Room Accommodations

The Casa has seven guest rooms, three on the first floor and four on the second floor. Each one is unique with its own little flair and flavor. We chose the Sevilla Room on the second floor, as it had everything we like — a king bed, jetted tub, walk-in shower, and french doors leading to a private balcony. Sevilla is a lighthouse-themed room with classy nautical colors of navy blue, white, and a splash of red. Our bed was very comfy, the room impeccably clean, and I absolutely loved the quality and scent of the toiletries (there was also a generous supply of extra toiletries in the hallway).

During our stay, as the rooms at the inn were vacated and cleaned, the doors were then left open. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to browse and capture a few photos for comparison purposes for my next booking. (Enjoy the room photos below and let me know which is your favorite.)

NOTE: As with most B&Bs, there are no elevators, only steps leading to the second floor rooms. It was not an issue getting our luggage upstairs, but for those with mobility challenges it may be. In that case, I would recommend a first-floor room (one is ADA compliant), or simply ask one of the hosts for assistance.

TIP: Our second floor Sevilla Room did not have its own thermostat to control the heat and/or air conditioning, only a common one in the hallway controlled by the staff. Once again, this was not a problem for us, but worth mentioning if anyone is adamant about needing a particular temperature.

TIP: For a quieter room, choose one upstairs, away from the traffic flow on the first floor. All guests must pass by the first-floor rooms in order to access the dining area and front sitting room which has the complimentary snacks and beverages. Typically, this isn’t an issue since the inn is small with limited traffic. Only extremely lite sleepers may find it bothersome.

Evening Social Hour at Casa de Suenos

After check-in hubby and I freshened up and made our way downstairs for the complimentary evening Social Hour, which occurs daily from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. This included an assortment of wines (from the local San Sebastian Winery), a selection of beer (from Bold City Brewery Beer), house-made sangria on weekends, assorted veggies with homemade dill or curry dip (I really must get the recipe for that incredible dill dip!), and a different specialty appetizer every day.

In addition to the great food, this is where you have an opportunity to mingle and meet other guests from the inn. We had the pleasure of connecting with three other couples and enjoyed sharing life stories and our world-travel adventures. Our newly found friendships were so delightful we decided to do the holiday “Nights of Lights” tour together as a group. We had a blast! What a festive and fun way to celebrate the holidays in the Sunshine State!

Every evening after that, we would meet up during the Social Hour. One of those evenings the fun never stopped. No, seriously. Miss Linda (another one of our gracious hosts) recognized the awesome fun and conversation we were having, so she allowed us to remain in the dining room way beyond the scheduled ending time. (We were still there at 9:00, but don’t tell the innkeepers!) The fact we missed dinner that night didn’t seem to bother any of us, as Linda kept the “food and beverages” flowing until she ran out! Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard… for so long! We all exchanged phone numbers in an effort to keep in touch, and expressed a desire to meet up again at Casa every year!

A Bountiful Breakfast at Casa!

The next morning we were ready for a big breakfast, especially since we bypassed dinner the night before. There’s just something special about breakfast at a B&B. Come to think of it, if the word “breakfast” is in your name, I suppose you better do it well! At Casa, it’s a hearty buffet-style breakfast. At first I wasn’t crazy about the idea of a buffet breakfast, as we usually choose B&Bs that offer a multi-course gourmet sit-down breakfast (I know, my spoiled butt likes to be pampered!). But I later realized I like the buffet option better — I can take more of what I like, and less of what I don’t! And for hearty appetites, seconds (and thirds) are encouraged by the hosts.

The breakfast always includes two hot homemade entrees, which vary from day to day, fruit salad or fruit soup (the chilled strawberry soup is to die for!), freshly baked breads, coffee and assorted teas, fresh juices, homemade granola, cereals, yogurt, and a full serving of inn hospitality. On weekends and holidays Casa offers complimentary mimosas and make-your-own bloody Mary’s. Since hubby and I were there for Thanksgiving, we were treated to the special Thanksgiving Holiday Brunch, which was outstanding. (Here’s a link to the breakfast buffet menu.)

Most days the breakfast was so plentiful we were not hungry again until the evening social hour. And after that, we were usually too full for dinner. We tried doing dinner at a nice restaurant one night, but left half the food on our plate. And… we knew Steve would have a delectable sweet treat waiting in our room upon our return (he had already told us what it was going to be). The decadent evening desserts were delivered to our room nightly, between 8:00 and 9:00 pm. (Check out the special cupcakes we received on Thanksgiving Eve!) The food at Casa really is good! If you partake of everything they offer it can greatly reduce your dining costs.

And although it is acceptable to take the food to the garden patio or back to your guest room, you would certainly miss out on the remarkable ambiance of the gorgeous dining room with its majestic palladium windows bathing the area with bright natural Florida light. In fact, both sitting rooms (East and West) have walls of windows and loads of sunlight. Even on a rainy day, Casa smiles bright!

TIP: As with most bed and breakfast inns, Casa de Suenos is extremely accommodating to those with special dietary needs. Just ask!

In Conclusion…

As an 18-year Florida resident hubby and I have vacationed from Amelia Island and the northern border to the southernmost point in Key West, and everywhere in-between. Atlantic coast, Gulf coast, we’ve seen most of what Florida has to offer. Undeniably, St. Augustine holds a special place in my heart. It’s one of my favorite cities in the Sunshine State — charming, quaint, romantic. I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate 30 years of marriage. Befitting, after all, people have been falling in love here for 450 years. Wander through the ancient brick streets of downtown and you’ll be sucked into a magical atmosphere that hovers over the nation’s oldest city.

Add to that, Casa de Suenos. It is, in a word, perfection. They just don’t make B&Bs like this anymore. Casa distills the mood-elevating properties of a classic bed and breakfast inn. I highly recommend this inn for any special occasion, or no reason at all. When romantic Saint Augustine is presented with a full serving of Casa de Suenos hospitality, it’s a match made in heaven! Happy Anniversary, hubby!

Lake Eola Park Downtown Orlando: Review

Iconic Lake Eola Fountain with Downtown Orlando Skyline

Iconic Lake Eola Fountain with Downtown Orlando Skyline

Lake Eola — The Iconic Symbol of Downtown Orlando

Orlando Florida, the vacation capital of the world! Though the Sunshine State is synonymous with Disney and other world-class theme parks, it’s so much more than that. Over the years Orlando has evolved from a small citrus-centered city to the rapidly growing cultural metropolis we see today. But with that evolution, one thing has remained unchanged — the iconic symbol of Downtown Orlando: Lake Eola! With its graceful swans and majestic fountain, it is still the center of The City Beautiful.

Whether you’re a tourist desperately searching for a respite from Mickey and his exhausting magic, or a life-long Floridian on a mission to see more of this great state, Lake Eola Park provides the perfect place to simmer down, loosen up and chill out. I’ve lived in Florida for 18 years, and until recently, never spent any quality time at Lake Eola. Sure, hubby and I have driven past the famous fountain a million times, and even stopped once with our grandson to check out the awesome Lake Eola Christmas Tree (which I highly recommend). But when our daughter moved to the Downtown district it was a clear sign Lake Eola needed further exploration.

Where to Park at Lake Eola

One of Lake Eola’s strengths is also its weakness. Lake Eola Park is located right in the heart of Downtown Orlando. And like most other busy downtown districts parking can be an issue. Since we were there during an off time of day, there were some street parking available. That was a blessing and certainly saved us the frustration of bumper to bumper traffic all vying for the same occasional empty spot.

If you park on Washington, Central, or Rosalind you will have to feed the meter. Free parking is available on Eola Drive (off E. Robinson Street). Otherwise, there are a number of paid parking lots and parking garages nearby, ranging in price from 3-10 bucks. Uber is also a good alternative, as any parking violators are swiftly towed.

NOTE: For the most up-to-date information on Lake Eola parking, it’s best to ask your GPS-enabled device prior to arrival. The physical address is 512 East Washington Street, Orlando Florida.

Lake Eola's Scenic Sidewalk is .9 Miles Long

Lake Eola’s Scenic Sidewalk is .9 Miles Long

The Sights Along Lake Eola’s Scenic Sidewalk

As we entered Lake Eola Park the serene scene looked exactly like I had seen on those fabulous Florida postcards. The colorful and contemporary high-rises of Downtown Orlando provide the perfect backdrop for this popular lakeside destination. The sidewalk that encircles the lake is just under a mile long (.9 miles to be exact). Even without a Fitbit on your wrist, walkers, joggers, and runners can easily keep track of distance. Hubby and I visited Lake Eola on a weekday in March, in the middle of the day. It was a less-busy time so we were able to stroll the scenic sidewalk at a leisurely pace, purposely pausing from time to time to enjoy the peaceful scenery.

Along the way we saw people reading books, relaxing on the lawn, feeding the swans and other birds inhabiting the park, sightseeing from the rental swan-shaped paddle boats, and grabbing a bite to eat at the Relax Grill. The spectacular view of Orlando’s skyline was gorgeous, just as expected. And since it was springtime in Florida, the flower beds were bubbling with beautiful blooms. They may not be your typical daffodils, since spring flowers are different here in the subtropics, but the botanical beauties in this climate do provide an awesome flower fix any time of year.

We got a close-up look at the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which hosts numerous concerts, plays, dance performances, and movie showings throughout the year. This outdoor venue and stage was donated to the City of Orlando by the Walt Disney Company in 1989. The theatre is also home to holiday events including Christmas shows and seating for the popular Fourth of July fireworks in Downtown Orlando. The bandshell has a really cool-looking retro design with a scallop-shaped facade, reminiscent of Florida beach scenes from the 1950s. A show at the Walt Disney Amphitheater is now on my bucket list. Imagine sitting lakeside in the middle of winter listening to live renditions of holiday classics, all while gazing at Orlando’s cityscape and the Lake Eola fountain decked out in festive red and green. Yeah, just one of a million reasons to celebrate Christmas in Florida!

NOTE: The rental fee for the paddle boats is $15 per 30 minutes. Hours of operation (weather permitting):
Sunday – Tuesday, 10 – 7 and Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 10. Each boat holds 5 people. A wheelchair accessible boat is also available. The boat rental dock is right across from the Relax Grill. Oftentimes, there are discount coupons available online for the boats. For example: Groupon frequently runs 40-50% off if purchased in advance!

Art at Lake Eola Park

Orlando Florida is internationally known for its many theme parks and diverse entertainment options. But if you’ve never ventured to Orlando’s Downtown district, or haven’t been there in the last decade, it’s worth a visit. In addition to a vibrant nightlife, Orlando has theaters, first-class restaurants, sports venues, and a strong arts community.

In 2011, See Art Orlando was birthed. The vision was for a permanent installation of eight contemporary public art sculptures in Downtown Orlando. Supported by private philanthropy, the sculptures were commissioned by eight internationally renowned artists, including one from Central Florida. The works of art were to represent the diverse fabric of The City Beautiful. Two years later, in 2013, the collection was unveiled. They are stunning, to say the least. They were created from a variety of mediums, all very different, yet with much the same goal — symbolizing Orlando’s future in the arena of fine arts. For a list of the eight sculptures and their locations, you can download the walking tour pamphlet here. I was surprised to learn that six of the eight sculptures surround Lake Eola, with the other two only a few blocks away.

Additionally, the red Chinese pagoda at Lake Eola is a work of art, in its own sense. It was erected in 1988 as a symbol of international friendship. You can read the full history of the pagoda here, as told by the University of Central Florida (UCF) Department of History.

Lake Eola Park is also home to a beautiful sculpture commemorating the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, and all World War ll Veterans.

Lake Eola’s Famous Fountain

And then there’s that famous fountain. It’s such a prominent and well-known symbol of Downtown Orlando that it has become the “official” icon of the City of Orlando. Over the past 61-years it has been one of the city’s most photographed landmarks. The original Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain was built in 1957 to celebrate Orlando’s 100th birthday. After a lightning strike in 2009 to a system that was aging and already experiencing problems, it was completely refurbished in 2011, to the tune of $1.5 million dollars.

At night the 60-foot-tall fountain comes alive with a choreographed show set to music. The colors of the water and the musical themes change with the occasion or season. The fountain is lit up to honor dozens of different organizations and causes throughout the year. Shows run nightly at approximately 8:00 and 9:30 PM, lasting about 6 minutes. (Show times change seasonally.) The fountain is impressive any time of day, but is especially beautiful at night with all the bright colors reflecting in the water.

The Lake Eola fountain has received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Award, which is earned by consistently getting great reviews by travelers. The fountain is ranked #45 of 456 things to do in Orlando. (You can read some of the reviews here.)

In Conclusion

Quite honestly, I was pretty impressed with Lake Eola Park. I had no idea it was this nice. I enjoyed every moment there and regret not discovering its beauty until now. As an inexpensive (or free, depending on parking) thing to do in Orlando, I highly recommend a visit. Obviously, it doesn’t have the same “wow” factor or sense of adventure that pulls people to the theme parks, but rather an oasis of natural beauty. There are no photo ops with Mickey, Minnie, the Minions, or those monumental Marvel Characters. It’s simply a low-tech experience that constantly receives high marks! If you’re in the greater Orlando area and searching for a place where the pace slows to a more natural tempo, the peaceful ambiance of Lake Eola is a good choice.

And it seems there’s always something going on there. Check out the calendar of events before you go. Every Sunday you’ll find a farmers market, there are free summer movie nights, an annual bicycle race, arts & craft shows, spring fiesta, and a plethora of other family and pet friendly activities. I look forward to returning to Lake Eola Park!

NOTE: For the little tykes with tons of excess energy, there is a nice playground area. And, you’ll be relieved to know Lake Eola has reliable public restrooms.

Review: Manatee Lagoon Discovery Center

The Connection Between Manatees and Electric Energy

If, during your Florida travels, you find yourself immersed in the beauty of the Palm Beaches along Florida’s Treasure Coast, you will want to add Manatee Lagoon to your itinerary. Since manatees and the Sunshine State seem to be synonymous, it makes sense someone would create a discovery center dedicated to these gentle giants. Alas, Manatee Lagoon in Riviera Beach, Florida was born.

Opening in 2016 at a place where the peaceful creatures naturally congregate, this educational center allows you to escape into the wonderful world of manatees. Here, you will explore the connection between the Florida manatee and the power of electric energy. The 16,000-square-foot Manatee Lagoon Discovery Center was created by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), Riviera Beach. It was built shortly after FPL modernized their natural gas plant. It appears this once-endangered species is highly attracted to the warm-water discharges of FPL’s energy center. In fact, large pods of the marine mammals can be viewed here, especially during Florida’s cooler weather months. The best opportunity to spot sea cows (manatees) is from November 15 through March 31.

No worries, though, if you happen to visit Manatee Lagoon outside this window of opportunity as I did. The guided tour alone is worth your time. Additionally, there are other fun family options offered at the facility throughout the year. Check out the extensive calendar of events for free activities here. Outstanding offerings include art classes focusing on species found in the Lake Worth Lagoon, yoga on waterfront observation decks, educational aqua labs for kids, and story and craft time for toddlers.

Florida Power & Light constructed Manatee Lagoon as part of its environmental mission to educate the public about the relationship it has with manatees, but also to “inspire communities to preserve and protect Florida’s environment and wildlife for future generations.”

Note: All manatees that frequent Manatee Lagoon’s premises are wild. There are no captive manatees onsite. Manatees are a federally protected species and can only be held in captivity at facilities that meet all mandated requirements.

Manatee Lagoon — A Family Friendly Florida Attraction

As one of Palm Beach County’s newer attractions, Manatee Lagoon is perfect for visitors of all ages. The family friendly attraction consists of interactive, hands-on exhibits about the environment of Lake Worth Lagoon ecosystem and why manatees are so attracted to this inland waterway.  Since hubby and I attended the discovery center while most public schools were still in session there were mostly adults in our guided group tour. But our ‘manatee master’ conducted the tour in a fun and engaging manner that appealed to even the youngest children who were present.

The information was extremely educational. I mean, we’re talking a whole boat-load of manatee facts and details, that even as a Floridian I didn’t know much about. Oh, and did I mention that Manatee Lagoon Eco-Discovery Center admission is FREE? Not too many Florida attractions have that designation. Just one more reason to bring the whole family, even if you have a quiverfull of kids! The fun-filled learning experience is ideal for school field trips, home-schooling groups, summer camp excursions, or any other children’s outing. Additional information regarding field trips can be found here, including scheduling details and reservation request forms.

Snacks and beverages are available for purchase, or pack a lunch and enjoy the outdoor picnic and pavilion area. The gift shop sells a wide variety of manatee and marine-themed items, ranging from temporary tattoos and stickers to t-shirts and artwork. The prices are not outrageous, as is the case with many Florida attractions. If nothing more, treat the kids to a snow cone or ice cream, and the penny press can serve as an inexpensive souvenir.

Manatee Lagoon Guided Tour

The guided walking tour of the visitor center was excellent. We were told it would last between 30 and 60 minutes, and our tour lasted about 45 minutes. The tour Guides are called ‘Manatee Masters,’ and the young man we had certainly mastered the art of communicating to us everything he had learned about these incredible sea creatures.

He was doing an internship at Manatee Lagoon while studying to become a marine biologist. He revealed facts concerning the manatee anatomy, physiology, and the importance of GPS tracking devices.  He also explained the relationship of manatees and the Lake Worth Lagoon ecosystem. His insight into “all things manatee” was comprehensive, touching on all aspects of the manatee’s life cycle and habits. Although the scope of information was wide-ranging, he allowed ample time for questions (in case he forgot to mention something of interest), and even included a bit of fun trivia. The educational value was so complete, hubby and I would have gladly paid for the tour.

Apparently we’re not alone in our conclusion, as Manatee Lagoon has received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Award and is rated #6 of 101 things to do in West Palm Beach.

NOTE: The visitor center has a museum-like layout, allowing you to get the same information in a self-guided format if you choose not to participate in the group tour. Guided tours are offered five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, at 2:00 PM. (No tours on Sundays, and the facility is closed on Mondays.)

Florida Manatee Facts

I’ve included a few of the interesting facts I learned about Florida manatees during my guided tour:

  • Florida manatees are large, aquatic mammals that are native to Florida
  • Manatees are distant relatives to elephants (remnant of a time when manatees lived on land)
  • Size range from 9 – 13 feet
  • Weigh 1000 – 3500 pounds
  • Manatees are aquatic herbivores (plant-eaters)
  • Also known as ‘sea cows’
  • Females are called cows, males are bulls, a baby manatee is a calf
  • Manatees can live over 65 years (in captivity)
  • Of the wild manatees that reach adulthood, only about half survive into their early 20s
  • Florida manatee status has improved from ‘endangered’ to ‘threatened’
  • Manatees have only six neck vertebrae — they cannot turn their heads sideways, and must turn their whole body around to look behind them
  • The bones in a manatee’s flipper are similar to a human hand
  • A manatee’s teeth (all molars) are constantly being replaced every month
  • Manatees never go on land
  • Manatees breathe air but can stay under the water for 20 minutes without taking a breath (while resting)
  • Manatees are quite agile in the water — they can swim upside down, roll, do somersaults or move vertically in the water

In Conclusion

I totally enjoyed my experience at Manatee Lagoon Eco-Discovery Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. It’s not an attraction I would drive several hours to visit, but by all means, if you’re in South Florida near the Palm Beaches it’s worth checking out.

The contemporary, two-story visitor center is surrounded by wraparound decks, the perfect spot for manatee viewing. And although peak manatee season is from fall to spring, the educational value is worth a visit any time of year. The informative and interactive displays tell the captivating story of this once-endangered species.

Before rushing off, take a leisurely stroll along the seawall leading to the picnic pavilions. From here, you can watch the action at nearby Peanut Island and the Port of Palm Beach. Then, as you’re heading to the parking lot, a selfie or group photo by the manatee sculpture is a must.

I highly recommend Manatee Lagoon. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. And, of course, with free parking, free admission, and free tours it gets my vote for one of those rare Florida freebies!

Where Can I See Manatees in Florida?

If you’re like most visitors to the Sunshine State, you’re probably wondering, ‘Where can I find manatees in Florida?’ Most tourists (and a great many local Floridians) have never seen a manatee up close. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has created a fantastic resource for anyone desiring to view these gentle giants. The listing includes 7 rehabilitation/educational facilities to see manatees, and 12 additional locations to view manatees in the wild. The manatee locations map is available for download here. Each location has a helpful clickable link to obtain all pertinent information — directions, admission price, brochures, etc.
