The Lightner Museum St Augustine Florida

Exploring the “Nation’s Oldest City” doesn’t have to come with a historic price tag. While the cobblestone streets of St. Augustine are lined with world-class attractions, some of the most memorable experiences in this Florida gem won’t cost you a dime – or will at least keep your wallet happy.

From sun-drenched beaches to centuries-old fortresses, here is your guide to the best free and low-cost things to do in St. Augustine.

Take the Free Ferry to Fort Matanzas

While most people flock to the famous Castillo de San Marcos downtown (which is excellent but has an entry fee), Fort Matanzas National Monument offers an incredible historic experience for absolutely free. It’s located at 8635 State Road A1A South, St Augustine, Florida 32080. (Phone: 904-471-0116)

  • The Experience: Located about 14 miles south of the historic district on Anastasia Island. Entry to the park is free and includes a free 10-minute ferry ride across the Matanzas River to the 1740s Spanish watchtower (however, you must stop in the Fort Matanzas Visitor Center, NOT the St. Augustine city Visitor Center, to get your free boarding pass for the ferry).
  • Pro-Tip: Arrive early at the Visitor Center to secure your free boarding pass, as they are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

You can browse the National Park Service website prior to your visit for Operating Hours, Calendar of Events, Photos, Videos, Accessibility, and Entrance Fees to Castillo de San Marcos. Additionally, you can read or download the Official Castillo de San Marcos Brochure. (If you plan on visiting more than one national park or federal recreation site within the next 12 months, we recommend the America the Beautiful Pass.)

While there is an admission fee to enter the fort itself, exploring the exterior grounds and waterfront area is completely free. You can often watch reenactments and hear cannon demonstrations from outside the walls and enjoy incredible views of Matanzas Bay. Sunsets there are beautiful!

  • Budget Tip: Bring coffee or a picnic breakfast and watch the sunrise from the nearby seawall.

  • The Experience: You’ll get a self-guided educational behind-the-scenes look at how the distillery crafts their bourbon, rum, gin, and vodka using local Florida ingredients. And the best part? The tour concludes with free samples of their signature cocktails for guests 21+. (No reservations required.)
  • Optional Upgrade: The Spirit of Florida Bourbon Experience – a guided tour that requires booking. $35 per person.
  • Private/Specialty Classes: $25-$85 depending on the session (ex: Cocktail Crafting)
  • Location: 112 Riberia Street, St Augustine 904-825-4962 (within walking distance of the Historic District)

San Sebastian Winery – A Pioneer in Florida Winemaking

  • Tour & Tasting: Free self-guided tours and tastings 7 days a week
  • What’s Included: A 10-minute video presentation, a walking tour of the production facilities (5,000-gallon tanks), and a tasting of several Florida wines.
  • Optional Premium Tasting: Hubby and I opted for this! It’s a more in-depth tasting experience available on the second floor for about $5-$10.

The winery is housed in a historic building that was once part of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway. There’s also a rooftop restaurant on the third floor with views of the city. La Cocina at The Cellar offers fine dining for lunch and dinner, with live music on weekends.

We were first introduced to San Sebastian wines at the Bed and Breakfast where we stayed. Casa de Suenos served them every evening during their free complimentary social hour. They were amazingly good! (We ended up carrying multiple bags back from our tour of the winery!)

(If you’re looking for a more romantic and upscale lodging experience, check out my review article on Casa de Suenos. It’s our favorite St. Augustine B&B!)

Walk the Oldest Street: Aviles Street

One of the best parts of visiting St. Augustine costs absolutely nothing – simply walking around downtown! Step away from crowded St. George Street and wander down Aviles Street, the oldest recorded street in the continental United States.

  • The Experience: This quiet, brick-paved lane is the city’s original “arts district.” It’s free to stroll, soak in the European ambiance, and window-shop the many galleries.
  • Tip: If you’re visiting on the first Friday of the month, the city hosts the First Friday Art Walk, where galleries stay open late and often offer free refreshments and live music.
  • Notable Sites: Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, Spanish Military Hospital Museum, Father Miguel O’Reilly House Museum, Governor’s House Cultural Center & Museum. (Some are free, others require a low-cost admission.)

Early mornings and early evenings are especially magical for photography and avoiding crowds.

Known as the “Sacred Acre,” this is the site where the first parish mass was held in 1565.

  • The Experience: This peaceful waterfront site is home to the Great Cross, which towers 208 feet above the Matanzas River. The grounds are stunning, serene, and free to enter. It’s the perfect spot for a scenic walk or a moment of reflection away from the downtown bustle.

Because of the beautiful gardens, shaded walking paths, and historic religious landmarks, Mission Nombre de Dios is one of the city’s most relaxing hidden gems.

Vilano Beach is quieter and known for peaceful sunsets, while St. Augustine Beach on Anastasia Island has a lively pier area, restaurants, residential areas, and wide sandy shoreline.

While not entirely free, Anastasia State Park on the northern part of Anastasia Island is one of the most affordable ways to spend a full day in nature.

Traveling with kids? Project Swing Park, located right next to Castillo de San Marcos, is a massive 23,000-square-foot fenced-in wooden playground. Old Town Trolly Tour

If you’re visiting St. Augustine for the first time, I highly recommend splurging on a ticket for the Old Town Trolly Tour. Since parking is at a premium in this town, especially in the historic district, you likely will not be driving between destinations. The trolly is not cheap, but it is the best way to get from point A to point B! It’s always more convenient when you can leave the driving to someone else! The ticket allows you to hop-on, hop-off at various attractions throughout the historic district with unlimited re-boarding. It’s a fully narrated tour with 22 stops and 100 points of interest.

A one-day ticket will cost $35-$45 for adults, $17-$19 for children (3 and under free), but advance purchase online (and multi-day tickets) will get you the best price. Additionally, many attractions offer combo tickets that will save money. Here’s the link to Old Town Trolly Tour.

Money-Saving Tips for Visiting St. Augustine

  • Save on Parking: Downtown parking can be expensive. Consider parking farther from the main tourist areas and walking into the historic district.
  • Visit Midweek: Hotels and parking are often cheaper Sunday through Thursday.
  • Bring Your Own Drinks & Snacks: Especially helpful for beach days and sightseeing walks.

Things to Pack for a Trip to St. Augustine

  • Sunscreen: With miles of gorgeous beaches and Florida’s famous sunshine, you’ll want a bottle of sunscreen within reach.
  • Umbrella or Poncho: Florida’s sudden showers can come as a surprise. Be sure to pack an umbrella or poncho so you can stay dry even if your vacation falls on a rainy day.
  • Portable Phone Charger: Between taking pictures, checking the map, and looking for things to do, our phones tend to work overtime when we’re on vacation. Keep a portable charger close so you always have access to a little extra juice.
  • Cash and Quarters: Although some attractions are “cashless,” bring cash and quarters along for the ride. They’ll come in handy for the metered parking throughout the city.
  • Walking Shoes: Historic St. Augustine is one of the best walking towns in America! Therefore, it’s not just a good idea… but a necessary component in order to have a safe and enjoyable visit.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need an expensive vacation budget to enjoy St. Augustine. Between free beaches, historic landmarks, scenic waterfront views, and affordable attractions, this charming Florida city offers plenty of unforgettable experiences without breaking the bank.

For travelers who love history, photography, coastal scenery, and hidden gems, St. Augustine remains one of the best budget-friendly destinations in Florida. The brick streets, old architecture, hidden courtyards, live music, and historic atmosphere are the main attraction themselves. Many visitors, and I agree, say this is the highlight of the trip – and it’s completely free!
